Most of us have been guilty of this tragic little error. Problem is: it costs you and everybody who does it a mountain of quality traffic. This traffic just never gets to see or read your web page. And, without traffic, there are no sales.

This silly, simple mistake is this. 

When you make your banner, if the text in the banner is "text" and not "image" or "wallpaper", the text will be read by the search engines.

Take a example.

We didn't get our fair share of traffic to our Medical-Breakthroughs-Online. Now this was a site that had been online and doing quite well before our host decided to shut down and strand all our sites. 

This gave us an opportunity to restructure all our sites into better traffic generators, therefore, better online sales results. Needless to say, we were perturbed to see that there was next to no traffic going to the site except for such strings like:
"Colitis breakthroughs", "cancer breakthroughs", "acne breakthroughs"... etc. Are you beginning to see a patern here?

Exactly, because we texted in the name "Medical-Breakhroughs-Online" into the banner, the search engines took it to mean that these first three words on the page must be more important than what else follows. 

So, unless someone actually typed in the ailment followed or preceded by the word breakthrough, we didn't get the traffic. 

Now, I looked and agonized over that site for months until one day I hovered my mouse over the name and noticed that it was text and not wallpaper or image built right into the banner. 

I immediately yanked it out of the banner and reloaded all the affected pages. Three weeks later, we started getting the rest of the traffic we had left sitting on the table for some other, less coded web site. 

Simple, simple, simple. Yet, Huge!
